Palmerston North’s Iconic Café & Bistro
Tucked into the heart of George Street’s arts and theatre district, Barista has been a beloved local institution since the 1990s. Originally launched as Barista – The Espresso Bar, it was reimagined in 2009 with a fresh look and creative flair. The café’s striking interior features a hand-painted mural by former owner Steve Sayer, who spent over a decade transforming the soaring concrete walls with scenes inspired by the creative energy of the surrounding precinct.
In 2023, Barista was proudly taken over by local owners Shaun and Charlotte James. Long-time fans of the café, they feel incredibly fortunate to now be part of its story. Shaun and Charlotte have always called Palmerston North home and are deeply passionate about the city and its people. Together with their four children—who you may have seen lending a hand in the café—they’re committed to continuing Barista’s legacy of exceptional food, warm service, and creating a home away from home for all who visit.
We proudly serve L’affare coffee, expertly crafted by our skilled baristas, alongside a full café menu and an abundant selection of house-made cabinet food—freshly prepared each day using locally sourced ingredients. From early morning breakfasts to weekend brunches, there’s something for everyone, including plenty of gluten-free and vegan-friendly options.
As the day winds down, Barista transforms into a European-style bistro, offering a seasonal dinner menu and a carefully curated wine list. Head Chef Shane Flannagan, who has led our kitchen for over ten years, brings his passion for flavour and quality to every plate, whether it’s a classic favourite or a new seasonal dish.
With a rich history, unique atmosphere, and a strong sense of community, Barista is more than just a place to eat—it’s a Palmerston North experience.
